What GATE is
Government Assistance for Tuition Expenses.
GATE is a programme of the Government of Trinidad and Tobago that provides financial assistance to citizens pursuing GATE-approved tertiary programmes at approved local and regional institutions, public and private.
Not every programme is GATE-approved. Confirm with our Admissions team whether the programme you are interested in is covered before you rely on it.
Coverage and conditions
What it covers and what it asks of you.
Undergraduate
Tuition is covered in full for eligible citizens on approved undergraduate programmes.
Postgraduate
Grants cover 50% of tuition costs at postgraduate level.
Means testing
A cost-sharing model using means testing determines the amount of funding you are eligible for.
Citizenship and residency
You must be a citizen of Trinidad and Tobago and provide proof of residency for at least three years prior to applying.
Academic standing
You must maintain a minimum GPA of 2.0 to remain eligible for assistance.
Work obligation
Students receiving free tuition sign an agreement to work in Trinidad and Tobago, in the public or private sector, for a stipulated period after completing the programme.
Applying
How to apply for GATE.
GATE applications are made to the Government, not to the School. Register and apply through the GATE e-service at e-gate.gov.tt, and see the Ministry of Education’s GATE FAQs or ttconnect for the current rules.
